Indian students prefer US for higher studies

The United States continues to remain the top international destination for Indian students who make up for 17 per cent of all international students there, according to the US India Education Foundation (USIEF). “United States remains the top international destination for Indian students, hosting over 186,000, twice as many as a decade ago. Indians make up 17 per cent of all international students in the US today,” a statement by the USIEF said.

The Indian graduates shared their experiences studying abroad and discussed how they benefitted from the US education.

Ambassador Jennifer Zimdahl Galt, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs at the US Department of State, visited the USIEF over the weekend to underline the importance the US government places on promoting educational exchanges between the world’s two largest democracies.

The meeting came at the start of Ambassador Galt’s week-long visit to India and Bhutan,” the statement added.
Galt also met with Fulbright Program students, including Americans studying in India as well as Indian alumni of US colleges and universities. The Indian graduates shared their experiences studying abroad and discussed how they benefitted from the US education.

“EducationUSA advisers reported to the Ambassador that, contrary to some reports, the appetite for studying in the US remains high among Indian students.

“Prospective applicants report that they are most attracted by high-quality of education, the international value placed on US degrees, the opportunity to form a lifelong connection with the country,” the statement said.

Canada could overtake UK as study abroad destination

The United States and the United Kingdom have traditionally reigned as top markets for international study but political changes and visa policies might see Canada climb to second place.

The QS Applicant Survey 2018 found Canada has been increasing in popularity for students from Latin America, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East.

The opportunity to work in Canada after graduation, an internationally friendly culture and sufficient scholarship provision combine to make the country a more attractive place to study than the current political climate in the UK or US, says the study.

Meanwhile, political changes in the UK and US are likely to have knocked international student confidence in their safety and acceptance.

“Britain’s vote to exit the European Union preceded President Donald Trump’s promise to impose a travel ban on people from Muslim-majority nations entering the US,” wrote report author and QS Market Insights manager Dasha Karzunina.

Regardless, the UK and US remain top for international student enrolments because for legacy reasons; the reputation and prestige of their higher learning institutions remain major factors for students when picking a place of study.

“This shows that despite political uncertainties, the prestige of institutions in these countries just about outweighs concerns about visas, opportunities to stay and work, and feeling unwelcome,” the study explains.

The report also found students are concerned with gaining an internationally recognised qualification to ensure they get the most out of their qualification, as well as studying where there is sufficient funding available.

QS spokesperson Jack Moran told The PIE News that Canada’s growth as an international education hotspot is a “multi-causal phenomenon,” aided by lower fees, high quality of student experience, and the global perception of Canada “as a country that remains committed to liberal immigration policy.”

If international students continue to choose Canada for their education, it will likely overtake the UK as an international education hub.

“If Canada can sustain this level of growth, the UK may have to accept a relegation to third place, and our imminent exit from the European Union seems unlikely to improve the situation,” Moran said.

Study In Germany: Top Universities, Entry Requirements And Application Process

In recent years, Germany has emerged as one of the favored destinations for higher studies among Indian students heading for studies abroad. In the field of technology and engineering specialists, the number of students heading to Germany has grown exponentially. One of the reasons which make Germany more appealing to students is the low tuition cost. Most of the public universities in Germany are funded by the government and hence require zero to very less tuition fee for admission. In addition to the low tuition cost, Germany is also one of the European countries where the living cost for students is relatively low.

While for admission to many programs, an International student might need proficiency in the German language, there are many universities which offer a variety of courses in the English language too.

Admission Requirements

A student from outside Germany needs to have Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB), which means 'higher education entrance qualification'. For undergraduate students, this can be a high-school diploma, school-leaving certificate or university entrance exam result. Indian students are eligible to apply for a Bachelor program in Germany if they fulfill any one of the following criteria:
The student should have completed the first year of a Bachelor degree program from a recognized university in India in a relevant subject.
The student should have cleared the IIT JEE or JEE Advanced exam.
The student should have passed in Feststellungsprüfung entrance examination after attending a preparatory Studienkolleg. This is a full-time course with about 32 hours of instruction per week and usually, takes up to two semesters to complete. The two components of the course are German language and subjects relevant to the study program you want to register for later. The minimum eligibility criteria for enrollment in a Studienkolleg are a valid school leaving certificate (12th) with relevant subject combination and proficiency in the German language (approx. B1 level based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). A student's subject knowledge and if applicable German language proficiency is tested in an entrance exam (Aufnahmeprüfung) by the course coordinators before enrollment in the foundation course.

How to Apply?

In order to apply, first, go through the DADA website for admission requirements and other important information for International students. The next step is to gather more information about the university where you wish to apply. Once you have all the required information and you are sure of your eligibility for the said university and course, you can send a request for the application form to the University and carry forward the rest of the process.

The STEM subjects offered at TU9 universities:

RWTH Aachen University.
TU Berlin.
TU Braunschweig.
TU Darmstadt.
TU Dresden.
Leibniz Universität Hannover.
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
TU München.

Why study Engineering in Germany

The German federal foreign office grants students an 18-month extension of visa after studies for the purpose of seeking a job. Considering that most of the students would like to shift to the industry after studies, this extension gives us ample time to explore opportunities.

In terms of employment opportunities, especially in the field of IT andEngineeringg, Indian students certainly have an edge over others with a majority of them holding engineering degrees. “This combined with Germany’s constant demand for engineers is a win-win for both Germany and Indian students.

How To Choose The Right Overseas Education Consultant

Are you an aspire to study in a foreign university?

If your answer is yes, you would know the importance of an education consultant or counselor in facilitating your study abroad journey.

Your counselor doesn’t only ensure you an admission at a study destination of your choice but also helps you in getting a student visa. The importance of a consultant can, therefore, never be overlooked. You must, however, carefully choose your consultant.

This is why choosing a competent and well-qualified study abroad counsellor is incredibly important at this juncture. With so many education consultants available to counsel you through this process, and all of whom claiming to be the best in the field, choosing the right one is no simple task.

Here are few things to keep in mind while choosing your education counsellor .

1) Be clear about your goals

Before approaching an agent be sure about what you want to study and which your countries of preference are. This will enable you to communicate clearly with your agent about the kind of assistance you are seeking from them.

2) Remember to Do Your Research

Prior to choosing a counsellor, make sure that you've investigated a fair amount of options. Ask friends and family who may have gone through a similar process which counsellors they used, and how their experiences with them were. Also, use the internet and try and find as many reviews as possible for potential candidates. The internet is a priceless tool when it comes to researching study abroad consultants, so make liberal use of it. Make sure that the counsellors you're considering cover a large number of universities spread across many different countries as well.

3) Check the background of your educational consultant

It is important to find out the sheer status of the overseas educational agency before joining the same. It is important to be duly informed about its years of existence, whether it has really facilitated the needs of students making overseas abroad.

4) Visiting websites of different educational consultants is important

A good overseas educational consultancy will be consisting of former students with due specialisation in respect of overseas learning. Similarly, some of the best educational consultants will not refuse giving references of former students duly helped by the same. Make it a point to cross check the qualifying criteria of different college/university options by browsing their respective websites. Try to assess if your level of choice matches with the names offered by overseas educational consultancy.

5) Reviews and Ratings

A comparison between different counselors must be made before shortlisting any of them. A right move is to check their ratings online and read the reviews of other students. Even if reviews can be bought, they still never fail in providing strong and clear insights.

As a career coach myself, I strongly recommend choosing career based services only on the basis of ratings and recommendations.

6) Ask around

The education sector is all about word-of-mouth and referrals. If you have friends and family who have been through a particular consultant and are happy with them, chances are you shall be too. You can also ask the agent for testimonials from students they have assisted in the past.

7)  Ask about costs

Ensure that you are aware about any charges that the agent has for applications and counselling. It’s better to know beforehand than to be caught unawares whilst in the middle of your application process!

8)  Read all documents

Many of us don’t bother reading the documents we sign. It is essential to go through all contracts and documents before you sign them so that there are no nasty surprises awaiting you in the future.

And Finally, Trust Your Instincts!

To trust your gut can oftentimes be one of the best pieces of advice that a person can give. A good counsellor is there to serve your interests, and to assist you in living out your dreams.

StudyAbroad: French President Macron launches tech visa

Study Abroad: French President Macron launches tech visa to make France a 'country of unicorns'
  • A new tech visa seeks to attract international talent to the country
  • "I want France to attract new entrepreneurs, new researchers, and be the nation for innovation and start-ups," the new French president told CNBC
  • Venture capital investment in France hit $1.6 billion in 2017

France launched a technology visa on Thursday which aims to attract international talent, with newly-elected President Emmanuel Macron talking about the need to strip out regulation to become a "country of unicorns".

Speaking at the Viva Tech conference in Paris, France, Macron outlined how his government would slash complex regulation, make it easier for foreign talent to work, and support start-ups with money, in order to create world-leading companies.

The visa is open to startup founders, employees and investors and is a fast-track procedure to obtain a residence permit in France known as the "Talent Passport". It's valid for four years and extended to immediate family members.

"I want France to attract new entrepreneurs, new researchers, and be the nation for innovation and startups," Macron told CNBC on the sidelines of the event, prior to the announcement.

Macron said that French talent often leaves the country because the environment is not attractive enough. The key is training and keeping talent in the country.

"The bet of the future for us is to carry on educating our talents, taking our students to the highest levels of academic success. We must defend our educational model, we must help our students go further," Macron said.

Another proposal put forward by Macron was a European Venture Fund that can support start-ups as they grow. And he spoke about the need for the Digital Single Market – a European Commission policy that aims to harmonize rules from streaming services to roaming charges.

Venture capital investment in France hit $1.6 billion in 2016, a steady level from the $1.7 billion the year before. It still lags the likes of Germany and the U.K. but has seen a lot of investors jump into the market. It also boasts its fair share of unicorns such as long-distance ride sharing company BlaBlaCar.

"Entrepreneur is the new France."

StudyAbroad: Why Study in Switzerland

Switzerland has no natural resources, education and knowledge have become very important resources. Therefore Switzerland claims to have one of the world’s best education systems. The most popular of the educational facilities for foreign students are the Swiss Hospitality Schools. In the past, and even today, people from all over the world visit Europe and Switzerland for its natural beauty and quality of service. This tiny nation with a population of 7 million has 5600 hotels which provide accommodation for more than 35 million guests every year!

Tourism is indeed a very important economic activity in Switzerland. Due to the lack of manpower and the high cost of our labour force, the Swiss hospitality industry not only welcomes a majority of international visitors but also employs a truly international work force. This is also reflected in hotel management schools, in terms of the curricula offered and the mix in the student population.

Located in various towns and cities across Switzerland, these schools are renowned worldwide for their high standards and are almost a pre-requisite for hospitality students looking for a first class education.

Education in Switzerland

In recent years, Switzerland has rapidly evolved as one of the world’s top education destinations. In comparison to other popular study destinations like UK, USA, Canada and Australia, Switzerland is a smaller country but the quality of education offered is very high.

Pre-dominantly three languages are spoken in Switzerland: German, French and Italian. There are 12 universities in Switzerland and depending on where they are located, the language of instruction varies. Having said that, in the recent years, there is a conscious effort to attract students who are English language speakers in recognition of the fact that they are the ones who are looking for educational opportunities outside of their home countries. Knowledge of German and French is recommended, however, if you identify right kind of programmes which are 100% taught in English, in terms of securing a qualification, you will not have trouble. Regularly updated list of qualifications taught in English is available and should be referred to by students to ensure that they don’t have any trouble understanding the curriculum. It should also be remembered that students are likely to find maximum programmes at Masters level taught in English.

Switzerland has a long established and outstanding reputation for excellence in Hospitality education and training. Many of the world’s successful hoteliers have been educated in this beautiful and safe country. Switzerland demonstrates greatness in its precision approach to detail. That is why so many Swiss corporations rank among the world’s finest research institutes. Switzerland is also home to some of the world’s leading laboratories. Majestic mountains, green woodlands, crystal clear lakes, roaming vineyards, breathtaking landscapes and enchanting cities – Switzerland has it all. Located in the heart of Europe, Switzerland has Paris, London, Amsterdam, Rome and Madrid at its doorstep, as all are within an hour’s flight. Switzerland offers not only the finest landscapes but also the cultural heritage of a multilingual population, where people have learned from childhood to live peacefully with their countrymen and women, who often speak a language different from their own. In such a country and environment, everybody can feel safe. These secure and friendly surroundings make it very easy to combine study with the discovery of people, culture and the beauty of the country. Many international companies have selected Switzerland for their headquarters because of the country’s reputation for stability, safety and multicultural understanding.
