Most Affordable Places to Study Abroad in 2018

Access to education is one of the basic rights of people across the world, and many are extremely lucky to have had the chance to complete at least high school. However, when it comes to pursuing higher education from reputed institutions, especially those that are based in an international destination, there are only few who can afford to study abroad in the destination of their choice.

Although there are several student loans and scholarships made available for young scholars who demonstrate academic excellence, there are external factors like cost and standard of living that determine the overall cost of studying abroad.

While strict financial planning/management is one way to manage costs while pursuing studies in an international university, it is extremely important for students hoping to study abroad to choose from those countries that have a considerably lower cost of living than most nations.

Let us explore some of the most affordable destinations, in terms of cost of living from lowest to highest for students hoping to study abroad

Russia - The country and its people have contributed significantly to different fields, making it a wise choice for students who have a variety of interests. Potential students looking to pursue the arts, such as literature, ballet and music, will find many programs that can cater to their needs. On the other hand, the country is also recognized for its contribution to the sciences and research, making it a potential study destination for students leaning towards taking courses in those fields. Russia is also an ideal country to study the history, cultures and languages of its region, as it provides an environment wherein students learn first-hand about the subject. The different degree programs typically cost around $1500 to $8000 in tuition fees per year. The exact cost varies depending on the major taken as well as the institution granting the degree. In addition to tuition fees, prospective students also need to take into consideration the living costs in Russia. Rent in most cities can cost an average of $250 - $550 for a month.

Hungary - Hungary is a country located in central Europe with a population of 9.8 million people. Its capital, Budapest, is bisected by the Danube River. Its cityscape is studded with architectural landmarks from Buda’s medieval Castle Hill and grand neoclassical buildings along Pest’s Andrássy Avenue to the 19th-century Chain Bridge. The standard of education in Hungary is high, the tuition fees one of the lowest in Europe. The cost of living in Hungary for students is put at 250 Euro to 500 Euro per month. The tuition fee in Hungarian universities is quite low and affordable. These fees vary from school to school and fees for international students have to pay a tuition fee of approximately 1000 - 3000 Euro per year.

Germany – As an emerging education destination, Germany saw a 14 percent increase in the number of international students from 2,82,201 to 3,21,569, enrolled in its universities between 2013 and 2015. Additionally, it has one of the best education infrastructures in the world and is also considered by many as one of the top countries to specialise in engineering and technology.
Despite being a central-European nation, cost of living in Germany is quite low compared to other European countries. The cost to study in Germany approximate $4,000 per year cost.

Poland - As is the case with Sweden, the Polish education system is also very advanced. Even though there is a language barrier, numerous programs are taught in English, out of which two ranked within the top 100 by the Financial Times. An MBA degree from Poland costs roughly $11,000 - $19,000 while the annual cost of living is about $4000 -  $6000. However you look at it, that is a steal!

France - France is one of the more favoured destinations for students wanting to pursue an MBA program abroad. The country has a vibrant and diverse student population, so it is relatively easy to settle in quickly, especially if you know the language. However, many universities offer English-taught MBAs, so not knowing French is not a barrier. An MBA from France comes with a price tag of approximately $9,000 - $12,000. Living costs vary according to the city. In Paris, for instance, you would pay around $12,000 per year, while a less cosmopolitan city would probably cost $10,500 annually.

Dubai - The overall education of education in Dubai is comparatively low as in other preferred developed nations. The rapid growth of Dubai and Abu Dhabi mean there are ample career opportunities upon graduation in fields from hospitality to banking to media to medicine. Students choosing to study here can choose from a variety of fields in which to begin their careers. The sum of tuition fees for an undergraduate programme in Dubai ranges between 34500 to 50000 AED (UAE Dirham) per year. The tuition fees for a postgraduate programme in Dubai range between 45000 to 55000 AED per year. The living expenses range between 2600 to 3900 AED per year.

No matter of where a student chooses to study, it is evident that planning well in advance and preparing a budget can go a long way in ensuring they have a comfortable and fruitful stay through the duration of their course.

Studying Abroad Ups Your Chances of Jobs: Survey

As many as 45 per cent students prefer the United States as their study-abroad destination, the survey showed.

Indian students with international exposure are preferred for jobs over students who have studied in the country, reveals a recent survey. Conducted in support with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the survey was conducted across India and other strategic locations of the world.

“As the survey insights state, Indian students have not been able to gain preference in comparison to the overseas students due to lack of exposure and right counselling at the right age,” president of recruitment consulting firm KIC UnivAssist told the media. “We really need to step up the counselling practices in India to help them gain the desired position in the international markets.”

Despite the shifts in the political scenario in different countries, 31 per cent of universities has seen a marginal increase (nearly 3-9%) in their international student enrollment this year while 45 per cent of them said it is the same as last year. As many as 45 per cent students prefer the United States as their study-abroad destination, followed by 14 per cent for Canada, 13 per cent for the eUK, 10 per cent for Australia, 8 per cent for South East Asia and 7 per cent for Europe.

According to the survey, which included the opinions of industry leaders, counsellors and students of high schools, universities and other academic institutions, 56 per cent of universities feel that high schools need to play a bigger role in the smooth transition of students to universities. More information and counselling at the school level would better prepare students for university/college, 98 per cent of the colleges felt.

The prime focus area of about 58 per cent of universities while interacting with high schools is “relationship-building/engagement” while 41 per cent of universities said their focus area is mainly “student recruitment”.

The survey also showed subject preferences for Indian students, with 40 per cent of them opting for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, followed by 22 per cent students choosing arts, entertainment and sports. Only about 1 per cent choose business and finance, while 17 per cent prefers health and medicine. With traditional courses seeing a major chunk of the preference, it appears that career and college counselling practices in India are still not at par with international standards.

The survey also captured the growing presence of technology in career counselling as 38 per cent of students said that their counsellor uses some form of technology to guide them.

“In today’s digital world transition of a student from college to career must be developed on the basis of individual interest,” Shobha Mishra Ghosh, assistant secretary general-FICCI, said to the media. “Industry today is looking at engaging with students through structured seminars and forums to equip them with a complete know-how of different career options."

Study Abroad In New Zealand at University of Canterbury

The University of Canterbury (UC), founded in 1873 by scholars from Oxford and Cambridge, is in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand.

Christchurch is between the South Pacific Ocean and the Southern Alps, giving students at UC access to all the amenities of a cosmopolitan, international city while allowing them to still be just a few minutes from the beaches and the ocean, and within an hour’s drive of alpine mountains, national parks, skifields, rivers, and wineries.

The University has five Colleges: Engineering, Education, Health & Human Development, Arts, Science, and Business & Law. In 2016 Times Higher Education recognised Canterbury as the 39th most international university in the world, praising UC for its international teaching, research and graduates’ job prospects.

UC’s programmes, teaching and research are all recognised internationally as being of the highest quality. In 2017, QS ranked UC in the top 1% of all global universities, while the University's programmes in Education and Civil and Structural Engineering both ranked in the world's top 100. UC's programmes in English Language and Literature, Law, Accounting and Finance, Geography, Sociology, Social Sciences and Management all rank in the top 150 worldwide.

In 2016 UC launched an exciting new range of postgraduate programmes, to which the response has been fantastic. Taught masters, postgraduate and graduate diplomas are offered in academic areas from across the University’s five colleges. The new courses, which include the Master of International Law and Politics, the Master of Engineering Studies, the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences and the Master of Teaching and Learning, are accompanied by generous Dean’s Awards of up to NZ$8,000.

Many of the new programmes have an internship or project embedded as an integral part of the course, and in some cases enable a change of career direction as they may not need applicants to have a background in the same field of study. These courses are a select sample of the many study options on offer at UC and are designed to address some of NeeZealand’s and Christchurch’s short and long term skills shortages.

Sport coaching

UC offers a Bachelor in Sport Coaching which seeks to train students for life in a sporting environment but also to inspire them to learn from their sporting background and become team players and leaders in the world of business and innovation. Several members of the New Zealand All Blacks have already enrolled in this programme, with a desire to extend their sporting leadership and business acumen into the wider community.

Engineering

Undergraduate engineers can choose from nine professional disciplines at UC:
  1. Chemical and process engineering
  2. Mechanical engineering
  3. Electrical and electronic engineering
  4. Mechatronics
  5. Software engineering
  6. Computer engineering
  7. Forest engineering
  8. Natural resources engineering
  9. Civil engineering
As an integral part of the degree students must spend 100 days on a practical work placement, often within large international engineering companies, giving them invaluable real-world experience.

Speech and language therapy

The Bachelor of Speech and Language Pathology, a degree accredited in the UK, equips students for a professional education in what is a highly mobile and developing field. Students gain first hand practical knowledge in laboratories and during field work, including working with speech and language therapists all over New Zealand and around the world.

StudyAbroad:Auckland University is New Zealand's top university to gain in 2018 QS world university rankings

StudyAbroad: Five universities gained in the annual QS World University Rankings released on Thursday, with all but Auckland University of Technology (AUT) among the top 350.

The University of Canterbury maintained its 214th place ranking and AUT remained in the 441-450 place bracket.

Internationally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) held its first place spot for the sixth year running, followed by Stanford and Harvard universities. English academic strongholds Cambridge and Oxford were fifth and sixth place respectively after California Institute of Technology (4th).

New Zealand universities performed well in research outputs – Waikato ranked 133rd, Otago 174th, and Canterbury 178th. The exception was Lincoln University, which featured among the top 200 universities globally in that measure.

The fourteenth annual QS ranking considered institutions' reputations as employers, their academic reputation and international staff and student numbers.

Universities New Zealand executive director Chris Whelan said domestic institutions did well in research and international connections.

"Despite really tight funding conditions, New Zealand universities have done well because we know how to cater to the rankings and they play to our strengths.

"That all of our universities are in the top 450 is truly impressive; no other country in the world can boast that."

Whelan said good rankings helped attract international staff. While about 80 percent of international students considered rankings when deciding to study here, they were not the main driver.

QS research director Ben Sowter applauded New Zealand's rankings "especially considering that it competes with far more populous and richer countries".

Indian students going abroad for higher studies after 12th grade

Going Abroad for Higher Studies after 12th Grade? The best study options after your 12th Grade, which are available abroad, are featured in this article.

Traditionally, students from India choose to study their undergraduate programme in India, work for a couple of years, gain experience and then go abroad for a postgraduate degree. This trend has changed in recent years, as easy access to education loans has prompted a rise in the number of students opting to study an undergraduate programme abroad, right after they complete their 12th Grade. Not just full-time undergraduate programmes there are a number of summer school programmes, vocational and technical training courses that can be studied abroad after completing 12th Grade.

As you plan the next stage of your academic life, you may be considering studying abroad. Traditionally, Indian students used to complete their undergraduate degree domestically and then pursue postgraduate options abroad. However, year on year, we have witnessed a steady rise in the number of candidates who pursue their studies abroad. Not only are students looking at full-time undergraduate degrees, but they are also exploring other options including summer school, vocational programs, semester abroad etc to build on their knowledge and skills. Here are a few essential facts to help you decide what’s best for you:
Why Study Abroad?
Indian youth are more open than ever to explore the wide gamut of experiences that study abroad offers. The factors that appeal most to students include:

  • Par excellence educational environment with world class infrastructure, eminent faculty and unlimited resources.
  • A holistic learning experience that taps on academic as well as extracurricular potential of students and focuses on shaping future global citizens.
  • An interface that facilitates personal and professional bonding across cross-cultural community and a diverse group of peers and professors

What are the best study abroad locations for undergraduate programs?
You have a wide spectrum of geographies to choose from when exploring study abroad options including favored destinations like the USA and upcoming locations including New Zealand and Germany. Let’s look at some of the most popular places students fly to:
  • USA: USA offers a conducive learning atmosphere. It’s home to the 8 Ivy League universities and other top- notch institutions that provide students with a treasure trove of experiences. A dynamic ambience, vibrant campus life and competitive educational culture makes USA a top study abroad destination.
  • UK: It is one of the oldest and most prestigious educational centres in the world. You’ll receive superlative academic grounding, learn from eminent scholars and academicians and be part of a rich heritage.
  • Singapore: Not too far from home, yet providing all international educational opportunities, Singapore is now gaining popularity with Indian students aspiring to study abroad.
  • Canada: Easy availability of visas coupled with exclusive benefits provided to international students and world class universities makes Canada a popular study abroad choice.
  • Australia: Australia boasts of renowned universities, peaceful environment and learner-centric educational system and is one of the most sought-after countries for higher education.

What are the prerequisites for studying abroad?
Foreign institutions emphasize greatly on your overall performance in both academic and non-academic fields. Make sure to craft a well-rounded profile to highlight your versatility and unique talent. If you are aspiring for top colleges in the USA they look at your achievements from class 9 onwards and need sandardized tests like SAT/ACT. Generally, English proficiency tests like IELTS/TOEFL along with your transcripts, resume/CV, essays/statements of purpose are the basic requirements for colleges abroad. For non-academic courses, you must have proof of a certain level of English proficiency and any prior work experience/internship. As you start with your application, go through details pertaining to other crucial aspects like financial resources, scholarship options etc. Check college websites and correspond with various institutions to be aware of the latest updates and announcements.
What is the best option for me?
Ask yourself why you want to go abroad for higher studies. Analyse what triggers your aspiration. Are you eying a specific course to learn unique skills, do you want to attend your dream college or experience an international study ambience? If you want to pursue a course, find out if your interests and capabilities are attuned to it and what career prospects it might offer ahead in future. Likewise, if you are targeting a college, check out what courses it offers, how well it coordinates career opportunities and finally whether it caters to your needs and talent.
Before you take a call on studying abroad, you must analyse your strengths and weakness, your interests and needs and your career goal. Once you understand your priorities, you can decide your direction towards studying abroad. Relax, introspect, do your homework and set forth on an enriching journey. All the best!

Considering studying abroad? Here's how to go about it

If you've just appeared for your high school exams or completed your graduation, you are likely twiddling your thumbs waiting for the results. A great way to beat the tension is to do the things you love.

An even better way to spend this time is to find out what you would love to do with your life.

Increasingly, getting into the best colleges in India has become a game of the marks scored in exams. Enter stiff competition. Does this mean you have to give up on your dream subject or on pursuing a career of your choice?

We're here to tell you that it is possible to step out of the rat race and open new doors for yourself.

One of the best ways you can do this is by considering studying abroad. Why? Because a real education is that which lets you explore yourself and get exposure to much more than just theory and knowledge.

Doubtless, studying abroad will enrich you with new experiences, an understanding of different cultures, meeting people from different nationalities, etc. and it will help you discover a new found independence in yourself.

But how can you actually go about it and what do you need to bear in mind? We'll tell you everything you need to tick off from the checklist.

1. ZERO IN ON THE COURSE OF YOUR CHOICE

A lot of you might have been caught in the trap of scoring the best marks and finding the most lucrative career option. This would dictate what you study. However, it is actually the reverse that will hold you in good stead.

The first step is to know your attitude, aptitude and interest so that you can zero in on what you would like to study. Another reason this approach works is that there are a plethora of universities abroad.

Just the number of locations and options can throw you into a tizzy unless you have a definite starting point. Therefore, we recommend identifying the course of your choice before selecting a university.

2. THE BEST UNIVERSITIES -- MAKE A REALISTIC LIST

Once you've zeroed in on the right course for you, identifying the right universities becomes easier. This is as simple as doing a thorough research on Google to know which colleges offer the programme best suited to you or speaking to friends and seniors who might be pursuing said stream.

When applying to universities, there are three things to bear in mind --

1) pay attention to the course curriculum and ensure it is to your liking; 2) look at the admission time and the application process in detail while keeping in mind relevant deadlines; and 3) don't restrict yourself to one or two universities -- widen your horizon and apply to multiple universities so that you up your chances of getting through.

3. BUT WHAT ABOUT FINANCES?

When it comes to studying abroad, the expenses involved are really the only deterrent once you've gotten past the stage of identifying the right course and universities.

However, this doesn't have to be the case at all. There are a plethora of education loan options available in the market today.

But choose with care. Don't get locked into an education loan that has a high interest burden. It's important to go for the right loan facility because interest rates might run as high as 13.5 per cent (in some cases even with collateral).

Go for one that offers a reasonable rate. For instance, Bank of Baroda's Baroda Scholar (for study abroad) comes at competitive interest rates starting at 9.65 per cent -- one of the lowest in the market.

The other advantage is that it comes with no processing charges and a free debit card. What's more, you can know your EMI outflow using their online EMI calculator and also apply for the loan online in easy steps.

4. ASCERTAIN PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

One of the best advantages of applying for an education loan is the freedom it gives you to study at a university of your choice and chase your dreams.

Needless to say, it makes you independent and responsible. But what you must assess is the placement opportunities available to you upon course completion. This is what will make the loan repayment a breeze. So do a thorough research of work and visa opportunities in advance.

5. SEE IF YOU CAN GET A SCHOLARSHIP

Lots of universities offer scholarships to students based on their previous achievements and a well-drafted statement of purpose (SOP). This will help widen your choice without the worry of expenses and make it that much easier to repay the loan.

In fact, you may even want to explore a research opportunity which will earn you an additional stipend and reduce the financial pressure further.

6. YOUR SOP IS THE KEY

Whether it is about getting into the right university, the right course or getting a scholarship, the key lies in a well-drafted statement of purpose and strong recommendations from your professors or colleagues.

Your statement of purpose will stand out and shine when you are really clear about what you want to study and why. This circle back to the very first point we highlighted. Identify what your interest and aptitude are and you will be able to envision a path that can be verbalized effectively in your SOP.

7. LOOK FOR A CITY/COUNTRY THAT HAS A STUDENT-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT

This is a small detail but can go a long way in making your student years more rewarding and enjoyable. Try and identify a university that has not just a healthy student community but also a student-friendly city that makes your stay fun.

This may let you rent an apartment with like-minded people, avail of public transport facilities with student's discounts, etc. Not only will you have a robust community to exchange ideas with, you may also be able to explore nearby cities and countries to learn more about the world.

As they say, getting an education in a field you are passionate about is the best way to discover yourself and grow as an individual.

With the many foreign universities offering various courses and with the aid of an education loan, you can open doors for yourself you never knew existed. So good luck for an enriching experience!

Study Abroad Trend Revile By PTE Survey

In a recent study conducted by Pearson for Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, the computer-based test of English proficiency for immigration and study abroad, Business Management and Information Technology (IT) emerged as the top two courses preferred by students of Maharashtra to study abroad.

The study of PTE Academic test takers reveals that 29.9 per cent students going abroad prefer a course in Business Management followed by Information Technology / Computer Sciences (17 per cent) and Engineering (14.8 per cent) to explore as a career avenue.
While the students continue to prefer these standard courses, there has been an interesting shift towards newer courses such as tourism and hospitality (6.8 per cent). Students are going for management courses in finance, marketing, retail and hotel industry. Furthermore, 71.5 per cent of these students apply for post-graduate courses while only 10.5 per cent opt to pursue graduate courses.

Indian students prefer US for higher studies

The United States continues to remain the top international destination for Indian students who make up for 17 per cent of all international students there, according to the US India Education Foundation (USIEF). “United States remains the top international destination for Indian students, hosting over 186,000, twice as many as a decade ago. Indians make up 17 per cent of all international students in the US today,” a statement by the USIEF said.

The Indian graduates shared their experiences studying abroad and discussed how they benefitted from the US education.

Ambassador Jennifer Zimdahl Galt, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs at the US Department of State, visited the USIEF over the weekend to underline the importance the US government places on promoting educational exchanges between the world’s two largest democracies.

The meeting came at the start of Ambassador Galt’s week-long visit to India and Bhutan,” the statement added.
Galt also met with Fulbright Program students, including Americans studying in India as well as Indian alumni of US colleges and universities. The Indian graduates shared their experiences studying abroad and discussed how they benefitted from the US education.

“EducationUSA advisers reported to the Ambassador that, contrary to some reports, the appetite for studying in the US remains high among Indian students.

“Prospective applicants report that they are most attracted by high-quality of education, the international value placed on US degrees, the opportunity to form a lifelong connection with the country,” the statement said.

Canada could overtake UK as study abroad destination

The United States and the United Kingdom have traditionally reigned as top markets for international study but political changes and visa policies might see Canada climb to second place.

The QS Applicant Survey 2018 found Canada has been increasing in popularity for students from Latin America, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East.

The opportunity to work in Canada after graduation, an internationally friendly culture and sufficient scholarship provision combine to make the country a more attractive place to study than the current political climate in the UK or US, says the study.

Meanwhile, political changes in the UK and US are likely to have knocked international student confidence in their safety and acceptance.

“Britain’s vote to exit the European Union preceded President Donald Trump’s promise to impose a travel ban on people from Muslim-majority nations entering the US,” wrote report author and QS Market Insights manager Dasha Karzunina.

Regardless, the UK and US remain top for international student enrolments because for legacy reasons; the reputation and prestige of their higher learning institutions remain major factors for students when picking a place of study.

“This shows that despite political uncertainties, the prestige of institutions in these countries just about outweighs concerns about visas, opportunities to stay and work, and feeling unwelcome,” the study explains.

The report also found students are concerned with gaining an internationally recognised qualification to ensure they get the most out of their qualification, as well as studying where there is sufficient funding available.

QS spokesperson Jack Moran told The PIE News that Canada’s growth as an international education hotspot is a “multi-causal phenomenon,” aided by lower fees, high quality of student experience, and the global perception of Canada “as a country that remains committed to liberal immigration policy.”

If international students continue to choose Canada for their education, it will likely overtake the UK as an international education hub.

“If Canada can sustain this level of growth, the UK may have to accept a relegation to third place, and our imminent exit from the European Union seems unlikely to improve the situation,” Moran said.

Study In Germany: Top Universities, Entry Requirements And Application Process

In recent years, Germany has emerged as one of the favored destinations for higher studies among Indian students heading for studies abroad. In the field of technology and engineering specialists, the number of students heading to Germany has grown exponentially. One of the reasons which make Germany more appealing to students is the low tuition cost. Most of the public universities in Germany are funded by the government and hence require zero to very less tuition fee for admission. In addition to the low tuition cost, Germany is also one of the European countries where the living cost for students is relatively low.

While for admission to many programs, an International student might need proficiency in the German language, there are many universities which offer a variety of courses in the English language too.

Admission Requirements

A student from outside Germany needs to have Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB), which means 'higher education entrance qualification'. For undergraduate students, this can be a high-school diploma, school-leaving certificate or university entrance exam result. Indian students are eligible to apply for a Bachelor program in Germany if they fulfill any one of the following criteria:
The student should have completed the first year of a Bachelor degree program from a recognized university in India in a relevant subject.
The student should have cleared the IIT JEE or JEE Advanced exam.
The student should have passed in Feststellungsprüfung entrance examination after attending a preparatory Studienkolleg. This is a full-time course with about 32 hours of instruction per week and usually, takes up to two semesters to complete. The two components of the course are German language and subjects relevant to the study program you want to register for later. The minimum eligibility criteria for enrollment in a Studienkolleg are a valid school leaving certificate (12th) with relevant subject combination and proficiency in the German language (approx. B1 level based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). A student's subject knowledge and if applicable German language proficiency is tested in an entrance exam (Aufnahmeprüfung) by the course coordinators before enrollment in the foundation course.

How to Apply?

In order to apply, first, go through the DADA website for admission requirements and other important information for International students. The next step is to gather more information about the university where you wish to apply. Once you have all the required information and you are sure of your eligibility for the said university and course, you can send a request for the application form to the University and carry forward the rest of the process.

The STEM subjects offered at TU9 universities:

RWTH Aachen University.
TU Berlin.
TU Braunschweig.
TU Darmstadt.
TU Dresden.
Leibniz Universität Hannover.
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
TU München.

Why study Engineering in Germany

The German federal foreign office grants students an 18-month extension of visa after studies for the purpose of seeking a job. Considering that most of the students would like to shift to the industry after studies, this extension gives us ample time to explore opportunities.

In terms of employment opportunities, especially in the field of IT andEngineeringg, Indian students certainly have an edge over others with a majority of them holding engineering degrees. “This combined with Germany’s constant demand for engineers is a win-win for both Germany and Indian students.
